The Eagle: Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick should stop ducking the public

Even though this isn’t a presidential election year, there still are a number of important races on the Nov. 6 ballot. We have races for many state offices, including governor and lieutenant governor, state House and Senate races, as well as U.S. Senate and House races. Locally, we have races for city councils and school boards in Bryan and College Station.

If you aren’t already registered to vote, now is a good time to sign up before it is too late.

There are many ways to learn about the candidates, even those with whom you are familiar. One of the best ways to compare the candidates is through a face-to-face debate or, better yet, debates.

Some office holders are refusing to debate. Shame on them.

Take for instance Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, one of the more divisive political figures in Texas. Even before his Democratic challenger Mike Collier issued a call for debates, Patrick rejected the idea.

Patrick spokesman Allen Blakemore said, “There isn’t anyone in the Lone Star State who isn’t absolutely clear about where Dan Patrick stands on the issues.”

That’s probably true, but not all Texans are happy with those stands.

But even if we know where Patrick stands — all we have to do is look at his far-right history — Patrick should face Collier in front of a live and television audience. We have a need to know where Patrick — and Collier — propose to take us over the next four years.
