KWTX Waco: Candidate for Lt. Gov. makes a stop at local high school

The Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor made a stop Monday in Central Texas.

Mike Collier campaigned at University High School in Waco, but before that he stopped by KWTX for a one-on-one interview.

“I think the biggest issue with property taxes, is that property taxes are going up and school funding is going down because really the state is grabbing our local money,” Collier said.

“If you think about Waco Independent School District spending per student is flat but taxes per student is up.”

In a first for Texas, Collier said he supports an Audit Performance and Integrity Commission. The group would be independent of the politics in Austin and do what its name says, perform audits.

Collier said while such an endeavor has never been done elsewhere, he is sure it will “work beautifully.”

Despite the rise in partisan politics both nationally and in Texas, the candidate says he feels most Texans aren’t that extreme.

“Most Texans are moderate in their orientation. Most Texans are fiscally responsible and would rather have the government stay out of their private life,” he said.

“We are so much more alike than we are not alike.
